Context
Midnight Monologues is a series of animated visual poems that transforms intimate emotional reflections into immersive experiences.
Chapter 1: Goodbye, My Dear Mr. Enigma is an experimental animated short film exploring the lingering traces of a relationship after its end. Through abstract 3D animation, real-time visuals, sound design, and poetic voiceover, the film navigates emotional detachment, the residues of intimacy, and the quiet reconstruction of the self. Set within the metaphorical space before dawn, it reflects on the moment when grief begins to transform into understanding and endings gradually give way to new beginnings.
The monologue has been adapted into four distinct language versions—Spanish, English, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese—exploring emotion as a universal language capable of resonating across cultural boundaries. The short film was originally developed as part of a larger immersive installation, where moving image, projection, and virtual reality expanded its exploration of memory, vulnerability, and interior emotional landscapes.

Hybrid Installation
Midnight Monologues takes the form of a hybrid installation combining physical projection and virtual reality, creating two parallel ways of experiencing the same audiovisual work. The projected environment represents an external, collective experience, while the VR component shifts the viewer toward a more intimate and individual encounter. Together, these two modes reflect the tension between an internal psychological landscape and the external body that continues to exist in the physical world.
For OCAD University's GradEx 111, the installation used two Optoma ML1080 projectors to display the monologue simultaneously across two walls, with synchronized sound and central seating for multiple viewers. The work was presented sequentially in English, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese, extending its exploration of emotion across linguistic and cultural contexts.
Alongside the physical installation, viewers could enter a surreal greenhouse-like conservatory through a Meta Quest 3 headset, where the English version of the monologue was projected within the virtual structure. The greenhouse acts as a metaphorical container for memory and emotional preservation, transforming the film from a screen-based work into an environment that can be inhabited. Noise-cancelling headphones separated this solitary VR experience from the surrounding projection space, reinforcing the contrast between collective observation and individual immersion.
